Information:
The See From Tracing - Geographic Name (451 tag) of
the MARC 21 authority record contains a name for a
place that is not used as an access point. Some of the
geographic names included in the Library of
Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), the Sears
List of Subject Headings, and the Library of
Congress Annotated Card or AC headings for children's
literature, also have alternate forms of the names.
The letters UF (Use For) appear at the beginning of
the list of alternate forms.
The rules in chapter 26.3 of the Anglo-American
Cataloguing Rules (AACR2) explain how to set up
cross-references for geographic names. In addition,
libraries may add their own see from tracings for
version of geographic names commonly used locally.
Using the 451 tag creates a see reference taking the
person who searches from the alternate form to the
correct geographic name.
