Information:
The 362 - Dates of Publication and /or Sequential
Designation tag contains the beginning and ending date
or dates of publication. The 362 tag may also contain
the volume, issue, or part number for the beginning or
ending of a serial. This information is useful to the
librarian and to the library user. Knowing the
beginning and ending of a serial may help in
determining whether it will contain information the
library user needs.
The Anglo American Cataloging Rules (AACR2)
discusses how to record the dates or chronological
designation of a serial in rule 12.3.
RDA provides guidelines on recording numbering of
serials in 2.6.1.4.
A serial will not always begin with volume 1, number
1. When a serial changes its name, a new MARC record
is created for the new title. The 362 tag will contain
the volume and issue number in which the title
changed.
First indicator 0 (zero) is used when the information
is formatted with volume number, issue number and/or
dates rather than in the form of a note.
First indicator 1 is used when the information is
given in an unformatted note style.
Subfield a contains the sequential designation or the
publication dates. If the serial has ceased
publication the volume and number of the last issue
and/or the date of the last issue is also included.

This tag ends with a period unless the last word ends
with another mark of punctuation (!, ?, -) or a
closing parenthesis.
