Information:
The 515 - Numbering Peculiarities Note tag contains
information about irregularities in the number or
publication pattern of a serial. The note would
include information too complex to enter into the
362 tag. In addition the 515 tag may be used to
show that the serial was issued in parts or revised
editions. Another use for the 515 tag is to tell
the year of coverage, for instance, an annual
report dated 1999 may cover the fiscal year
October, 1997 to September, 1998. The information
in the 515 tag may help library users find the
correct issues and information more quickly or
alert the library users when a serial does not
cover the years they are interested in.
The Anglo American Cataloging Rules (AACR2)
discusses how to record complex numbering and
chronological designations of serials in rule
12.7B8.
RDA provides guidelines on recording complex and
irregular numbering for serials in 2.17.5.4,
Serials published on a regular frequency may also
display peculiarities for a number of reasons. The
publication may be suspended for a period of time
and then started up again. The publisher may
combine issues or split one issue into several
parts. The numbering of the issues may not be
consistent. Numbers may get skipped or be repeated.
Some issues may not have any number at all, while
other issues are numbered.
Subfield a contains the entire Numbering
Peculiarities Note. When there are several
different peculiarities in a single serial the 515
tag can be repeated.
