Information:
Publication information of a MARC bibliographic
record identifies the place of publication, publisher,
distributor, etc., and the date of publication. This
information may be entered in the 260 tag or the 264 tag
when a distinction between functions is required.
Generally the 260 tag is used for AACR2 and the 264 tag
for RDA.
The first indicator shows the sequence of statements.
Blank is used when an item is first cataloged. A value
of 2 is used when the place of production, publication,
distribution, manufacture or the name of the producer,
publisher, distributor, or manufacturer changes. A value
of 3 is used when the name of the producer, publisher,
distributor, manufacturer changes, or when the place
of production, publication distribution, manufacture
associated with the earliest statement changes.
The second indicator shows the function of each entity.
A value of zero is for production information, used mainly
with unpublished resources. A value of 1 is for publication
information. This will be the value used most frequently.
A value of 2 is for distribution information, a value of
3 for manufacture (printing) information and a value of 4
is for a copyright date.
The structure of the information in this tag is
determined by RDA 2.8.
In subfield a the place of production, publication,
distribution, or manufacture is entered. If more than
one place of publication is given on the resource, only
the first place listed is required for RDA, although more
than one place may be entered if deemed necessary. For RDA,
enter "Place of publication not identified" if no information
is found on the resource for the place of publication or a
place of publication cannot be determined.
In subfield b the name of the producer, publisher,
distributor or manufacturer is entered. With RDA, the
producer, publisher distributor, and manufacturer name
is entered as it appears on the resource. If no information
is found for the publisher, "publisher not identified" is
entered in brackets. If more than one publisher is given on
the resource, only the first publisher's name need be entered
for RDA.
In subfield c the date of production, publication,
distribution, manufacture or copyright is entered. For RDA
only the date of publication is mandatory. If a date of publication
is not given on the resource but a copyright date is given, the
copyright date may be used as an assumed publication date. This
assumed publication date is entered in square brackets in
subfield c of the 264 tag with a second indicator of one. An
additional 264 tag with a second indicator of 4 is entered with
the copyright date.
When a copyright date is entered, it is entered in a 264 tag
with a second indicator of four. The copyright date is entered in
subfield c, preceded by the copyright symbol or the word copyright.
No subfields a or b are entered in the tag with the copyright
date.
Occasionally a date will not be present on the item being
cataloged. In this case the cataloger should determine a
probable date, decade, or century. This information is always
followed by a question mark and bracketed. ([1972?] probably
published in 1972; [197-?] probably published sometime between
1970 and 1979; [19--?] probably published in the 20th century.)
If the cataloger is certain of the decade or century the
information is just bracketed. ([198-] published between 1980
and 1989; [19--] published in the 20th century.) If no date can
be determined, for RDA, enter "date of publication not
identified" in square brackets.

ISBD Punctuation
A semi-colon will precede the second and all
subsequent subfield a.
A colon will precede subfield b.
A comma will precede subfield c.
This tag generally ends with a mark of punctuation (.,
!, ?, -), a closing parenthesis, closing angle
bracket, closing bracket or a comma.
When a copyright notice date is entered in 264 second indicator 4,
no period ends subfield c.
