Information:
The 022 tag of the MARC bibliographic format contains
the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), and
any incorrect or canceled ISSN(s) related to the
serial.
AACR2 covers ISSNs in rule 12.8B and in the X.8
subsection in each chapter (2.8, 3.8, etc.), as
serials can occur in all formats, except manuscripts.
RDA provides instructions on recording identifiers
(ISSNs) in 2.15.
The ISSN Network assigns the eight digit ISSN. The
last digit of the ISSN is a check digit, 0-9 or X
(Roman Numeral for 10). The check digit allows
computer systems to validate ISSNs.
A valid ISSN is entered in subfield a of the 022 tag.
An incorrect ISSN appearing on the serial is entered
in subfield y. A canceled ISSN is entered in subfield
z.
