Information:
The 083 tag of the MARC authority format contains a
single Dewey Decimal Classification number or a number
span for the heading in the 1XX tag of the authority
record. The classification number may be qualified by
a descriptive term when the heading is represented
in more than one place in the Dewey Classification
schedules. Classification numbers are assigned from
the Dewey Decimal Classification and Relative
Index or the Abridged Dewey Decimal
Classification and Relative Index edited and
maintained by the Library of Congress and published by
Forest Press http://www.oclc.org/oclc/fp/.
Classification Numbers entered in an authority record
help the librarian determine what number to assign to
a similar new item.
The first indicator tells whether the classification
number comes from the Abridged or the Full edition of
the Dewey Decimal Classification.
The second indicator tells whether the Dewey
Classification number was assigned by the Library of
Congress or by another library or vendor.
Subfield a contains a single Dewey Decimal
Classification number or the beginning number of a
span. These are 3 digit numbers and can be followed by
a decimal point and other numbers. In long
classification numbers a slash (/) indicates where the
number may be shortened. In addition to the Dewey
Decimal numbers E, Fic, B, and 92 are used in this
subfield. Subfield b contains the classification
number ending number of a span.
Subfield c contains a descriptive term or phrase that
specifies the topic of the class number. This is
usually used to differentiate between two or more
class numbers associated with a heading.
Subfield 2 is used for the number of the edition of
the Dewey Decimal Classification. The Dewey Decimal
Classification and Relative Index is in its 21st
edition. The Abridged Dewey Decimal Classification
and Relative Index is now in its 13th edition.
